At only five miles long by half a mile wide, you would think making a hotel choice on Isla Mujeres would be easy. And you would be wrong. Isla Mujures is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the region, and it has the tourist infrastructure to support that popularity. Literally hundreds of hotels call the island their home. And yet, somehow Isla Mujeres manages to retain its fishing village charm and offer a relaxing, unforgettable experience to all its visitors.

The most important thing to keep in mind when picking among the many Isla Mujeres hotels is your budget. Secondly, take a good look at the island geography and decide where you would like to stay. Nothing is far away, but you’ll have a very different experience if you stay on the main downtown street versus if you go to a secluded hotel on one of the far points of the island.

The accommodations on Isla Mujeres can be organized loosely by their location. On the far northern end you have North Beach and Downtown, followed by the super-narrow and beachy Waterfront area. Following that, the bulk of the Island’s area is taken up by the “Colonias” area, which contains several Salinas, or lagoons. West of the major lagoon (Laguna Makax) is Sac Bajo, the (somewhat) more remote part of Isla Mujeres. As we continue south, you reach South End, the Caribbean side of the South End, and Garrafon where you’ll find the natural reef park.
